Eighteen years ago, high in the misty peaks of Boquete, Panama, a visionary French expat stood at an altitude of 1,800 metres and looked at the rugged landscape. Where others saw challenging terrain suited only for traditional coffee or cattle, he discovered something extraordinary: a perfect microclimate.
Driven by this discovery, he planted macadamia trees — a bold, “wild” experiment that shattered conventional farming norms. Today, that wild idea has blossomed into a thriving model organic farm operating within a perfect virtuous circle: the same farm you’ll find at the heart of Wild on the Farm, Boquete Cloud Forest Lodge.
The Vision
Planting macadamia trees at 1,800 metres was highly unconventional. Macadamias are typically grown at lower, warmer elevations. However, this French pioneer recognized that Boquete’s unique highland microclimate offered the perfect balance of moisture, volcanic soil, and cool temperatures to grow dense, high-quality nuts.
Instead of forcing the land to fit the crop, he used the natural environment to spark a self-sustaining agricultural revolution.
A Model Organic Farm
This farm was never meant to be just a commercial venture; it was designed as a living blueprint for the future. Built from the ground up on the principles of permaculture, the estate thrives on a zero-input philosophy.
- Zero chemical inputs: the farm operates entirely without synthetic fertilizers, pesticides, or weed killers.

The ultimate goal of this 18-year experiment is total autonomy and food self-sufficiency — l’autosuffisance alimentaire — in Panama.
By proving that a high-altitude farm can produce high-value crops entirely without chemical assistance, this project serves as a powerful example to the local community and the world. It demonstrates, clearly, that ecological methods are not just viable — they are far more profitable, resilient, and sustainable than chemical-dependent farming.
